Covid-19 Pandemic
On 22 March, the Greek government announced a ban on all nonessential transport and movement across the country, starting from 6 a.m on 23 March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The restriction on traffic has inevitably led to a reduction in the routes of BeSmarters and consequently has affected the experiment carried out in the context of the BeSmart Project. Therefore, the research team has decided to extend the experiment to ensure the optimal quality and accuracy of the results, while the next phase change will depend on the evolution of the current situation.
4rth Phase of the Experiment
After driving for two months during the 3rd phase of the experiment, BeSmarters entered the 4th phase of the experiment on the 16th of February! Phase 4 enables the driver to view the Compare feature. This feature allows users to compare their score with the score of the average driver and top drivers, per selected period. Comparative evaluation with other drivers is an intervention based on providing incentives to improve driving behavior in a context of “social gamification”.
3rd Phase of the Experiment
On the 16th of December the BeSmarters entered the 3rd phase of the experiment! During this phase, the driver, in addition to the score he receives for each route, has the opportunity to observe on the map the exact points where he has presented risky driving behavior in terms of exceeding the speed limit, the use of the mobile phone , harsh accelerations and brakings respectively. The importance of this phase lies in providing visual feedback to the driver, an effective method that facilitates the process of learning and self-assessment of drivers!
1st BeSmart Lottery
Yesterday, on the 3rd of December the BeSmart team conducted the first lottery for the BeSmarters, as as a sign of gratitude for their significant contribution to the project. 2 Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 smartphones the prizes to be won!! 2nd Phase of the Experiment
The transition to the second phase of the experiment was successfully carried out on the 8th of October for all BeSmart users: drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists. Drivers have now the ability to receive a trip score, as well as notifications on their smartphones from the app. In addition, a separate and different application environment has been developed for users who choose the motorcycle as their main means of transport in order to ensure a better user experience.
Start of the BeSmart experiment
On the 2nd of July, 2019 the BeSmart team was extremely happy to launch the BeSmart Application. After running successfully a User Acceptance Testing, the App was ready to be disseminated to all BeSmart participants candidates. At present, the experiment counts 50 “BeSmarters” and recruitment continues, as BeSmart participants must reach the 200 drivers. In the first phase of the experiment participants are asked to drive in the way they usually dο, without receiving any feedback on their driving behavior from the smartphone application. The purpose of this stage, referred to as ‘‘Phase 1”, is to learn drivers’ naturalistic driving characteristics, which provide a baseline for comparison.
Design of the BeSmart Experiment
Within the framework of the design of the BeSmart experiment, the following have been carried out with great success: structure of the driving experiment, selection criteria for the participants, creation of all required documentation for technical reference and support as well as participants info pack and App guidelines, and finally the development of the BeSmart Application. On the 21st of May the technical design and development of the mobile application was completed and since then the BeSmart team is working on small issues in order to launch the application and start the experiment.
